I found this Silverware collection. It’s from my husband’s side. There is no information on it. I’ve done about 20 different google searches and I can’t find anything to match it. The company comes up, in various things, but there’s no direct match. Any information would be great. Or if someone could point me in a good direction I would be grateful.

I’d love to know how old it is. It is in a green “satin” box with two tarnished clasps on the front of it. We know it’s a family heirloom, but he has barely any family left to have information for us.

  1. I am confused that it says ‘Solingen – Germany’. For me, without the ‘W’ for West Germany, it implies that it was created after unification

  2. It’s not older than the 1920s, as that’s when the term “stainless steel” was introduced.

  3. The company name is GEBR. Emde which is more common last name in Germany
and to my knowledge no special or high value “silverware” is called Emde.

It’s probably a local “silverware” sales company that paid a Manufacturing company to put there name on a set and than Emde sold it to there costumers.

From the look of the set I would say it’s made in between the 1950’s and the late 60s

  4. so.. what i found googling is, that the company existed from around 1908- ? somewhere mid century… i assume it could have to do with ww2. the funny thing is, that they were specialised in razor blades and it seems they were pretty good at it and have still fans, who swear on these blades and buy them… i couldnt find a single mention of any kind of silverware at all… so this might be some “celebration edition” or sth for their customers as gifts. can you read what it says on the forks?

i found this museum page with one of their razor blades [http://www.museen-sh.de/Objekt/DE-MUS-789911/lido/Rm310](http://www.museen-sh.de/Objekt/DE-MUS-789911/lido/Rm310) which links to a barber museum in ulm “**Herr Zopfs Friseurmuseum an der deutschen Friseurakademie Neu-Ulm** Dieselstraße 4

maybe you want to write them an email and ask if they have any information about that company or wether they produced anything else but razorblades.

  5. Ich sach ma so, mit 80,- € biste da jut bedient. (Let me put it this way: 80,- € is a good price for you)

  6. There’s also the word KIEBITZ (lapwing, a bird) and an emblem which pictures that bird.

Kiebitz seems to be a trade mark of the company Gebr. (Brothers) Friedrich Ende in Solingen-Weyer.

Google lists many pages about razor knives for Kiebitz / Emde / Solingen, but mostly eBay, Kleinanzeigen or some boards about razor blades and knifes.

Solingen is called Klingenstadt (“blade City”) and has a long history of production of all kinds of blades like swords, knives, scissors, razors, and so on.

Weyer is an old farmstead which developed over time, but eventually merged with Merscheid and Ohligs, two of today’s districts of Solingen

I did not find any direct information about that company. There are at least two companies named Emde producing metal goods. During and directly after WW2, many companies were closed. But often, new companies were founded under the same name, doing slightly different business. Who knows if those companies I found are linked to yours..

There’s the Klingenmuseum (“blade museum”) in Solingen. Maybe, you could ask there…
