Police in Austria were searching on Monday evening for a gunman suspected of killing a local mayor and the head of a nearby hunt in an apparent dispute over game rights.

The authorities warned that Roland Drexler, 56, remained armed and “very dangerous” as they combed the forested Rohrbach region near the border with Bavaria, Germany, for traces of his whereabouts.

The first victim, Franz Hofer, 64, the conservative mayor of the town of Kirchberg ob der Donau and an enthusiastic hunter, was shot dead in a nearby field before 8.30am on Monday.

The Kronen Zeitung, an Austrian newspaper, reported that Hofer had driven past Drexler’s house and then been pursued until he left his vehicle near the village of Altenfelden, about 7km to the
