The decision follows last week’s authorisation by the government for the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to negotiate and finalise an agreement with Denmark regarding the donation of a matching amount of funds for the purchase of defence equipment.
The remaining funds from the package – about €43 million – will be used to finance a number of multilateral initiatives aimed at supporting Ukraine.
The funds are planned to support the coalition procuring air-to-air missiles for Ukraine’s F-16 programme, the coalition training the Ukrainian marines, the coalition for mine clearance, and the IT coalition.
The Swedish government said that as part of this support, Sweden will also contribute to NATO’s Comprehensive Assistance Package for Ukraine, which provides for the purchase of military equipment.
Background:
In May, reports indicated that Sweden planned to allocate SEK 75 million (about US$7 million) in military aid to Ukraine for 2024-2026.
Last month, the Swedish government presented a new military aid package to Kyiv worth more than €400 million, which, in particular, included possible training of Ukrainian pilots on Gripen fighter jets.
