I’m off to France for eight days, returning two days after the election (yes, I have voted). And so, in the fervent hope that I am not going to be coming back to an incipiently dysfunctional fascist state when I return, may I suggest the following while I am away:
1. Vote, if you have not done so already (and thank you if you have);
2. Don’t vote for fascists, the fascist-leaning, or the fascist-minimizing (which is to say, not for the GOP);
3. If you’re in Ohio, please vote YES on Issue 1 (and also for Sherrod Brown, and also for whomever is not the GOP candidate in the local, state and federal races you get to vote in).
I do sorely miss the days when I didn’t think voting for the Republican party in the United States was a vote to actively destroy the constitutional fabric undergirding our national life, but these are not those days. Maybe they will come again, but there’s a lot of work between now and then. That starts with this election.
Good luck, America! I love you and will see you again. Hopefully in a happier moment.
