I would rather encourage people already living in Switzerland to be able to have children while being able to live rather than mass immigration
Wow, it’s almost as if an economy that depends on immigration to fill jobs will struggle to fill those jobs without immigration :O
Can someone explain how having less people in the job market make the market tighter?
If something it would make harder for companies to find workers, not the other way around.
Is this just propaganda to push for opening borders?
More workforce has never in history been a solution. It makes companies lazy and stops innovation.
There are a couple of urban myths or legends, however you want to call these about Swiss immigration and job market/economics:
– The Swiss government only allowed Italian workers to immigrate in the 1970’s because the Swiss didn’t want to do the dirty and dangerous work
– In the 1990’s the government allowed the Balkans to seek refuge in Switzerland only because they hoped that those seeking refuge would help to fill the AHV/IV accounts back up
– In the Early 2000’s until now the Government was forced to let Africans, Afghans and now Ukrainians in to please the ‘Muricans and continue their shady weapons business.
IMHO those stories are bullshit to some extent and oversimplify things while throwing shade at people or organisations that are not to blame for anything.
Global population will stabilize at around 5 to 6 billion. And Switzerlands hopefully back at 6 to 7 Million.
The ideal solution is to make it viable for normal Swiss people to have children.
We have a highly sophisticated high trust society with tight rules that is based on and reliant on everyone following the same standards.
Society works more smoothly if most members are raised and educated in the same society based on the same standards and used to the same societal rules.
Immigrants from many countries struggle to really find a stance in Swiss society – with the notable exception of highly educated high skill and high income individuals (who would have a good stance in just about any society)
Left politicians should focus even more on helping Swiss workers and Swiss families – and right politicians should probably finally realize that if they are SOOOOO „pro Swiss“ and „pro family“ that they should finally freaking do something for Swiss people.
I hate this argument of “We need immigration for economic growth”.
Do we really need ‘more growth’? Does line have to go continuously go up to feed more and more unrealistic goals?
I’d personally prefer stagnation over importing more population. Or to make it more attractive for the population in Switzerland to have children.
oh no, gdp might drop by 1% in exchange for social cohesion! the horror
How many engineers does switzerland produce? How many of them actually had a engineering job, and not just students with a degree? You can add programmers, devs to this pool also.
How many architects does Switzerland produce?
How many doctors does Switzerland produce?
How many nurses does Switzerland produce?
How many constructors does Switzerland produce?
Do you know 1 single Swiss person working at McDonald?
If the answer to any of those questions does not equal to the amount of jobs with those roles on the market right now, it’s not going to happen.
Switzerland has very little immigration that involves UN-qualified or UN-educated people, aka refugees.
The reality is that Swiss people don’t want to work the hard jobs and most are not prepared for actual high qualification jobs.
I’d say that Switzerland already has enough people. More people would put a strain on public transport and roads. Also, there aren’t a lot of empty houses for people to move into.
It’s still relatively easy to get into Switzerland if you have a job. Harder to stay if you don’t though.
The high salary still means that people want to come here, so yeah, we will still benefit from cheap foreign labor.
To solve labor market issues around population degrowth there are 3 solutions:
1) Increase middle and high human capital immigration AND reduce low human capital immigration. The best and easiest solution in my opinion but politically impossible.
2) Boost fertility of locals but that’s almost impossible because people just want less children overall. The financial excuse that most say around children is bullshit. Like “I want children but I also want my freedom like when i had no children and only the super rich can afford this so its unfair blablabla”
3) Big reforms around the labor market, gov spending etc… For exemple administration staff can be reduced by a least 20% with good automatisation and better efficiency. Social sciences should be cut by at least 80%. Culture spending also. Too many very high human capital Swiss are doing utterly useless jobs like journalists simply because the system encourage those.
Why do people think GDP growth is the only thing that matters?
Lets invest in some other things, not just in abstract GDP performance.
