The British Royal Family may have cornered the market on royal drama over the years, but in 2024, the Norwegians seem to be saying, “Hold our crowns.”
The fam was recently in the news thanks to King Harald’s daughter, Princess Märtha Louise, who made a bizarre decision to marry a Hollywood shaman, stepping back from royal duties to pursue her business in clairvoyance and ‘creating miracles’.
But it is Märtha Louise’s brother, Crown Prince Haakon and his stylish wife, Crown Princess Mette-Marit—the future king and queen of Norway—who are the real headline grabbers.
The royal couple are dealing with both an arrest and a burglary incident involving the princess’s 27-year-old son from a previous relationship before she was involved with Norway’s future king.
AKA, Marius Borg Høiby who was born to Mette-Marit and convicted felon Morten Borg in 1997. Morten was allegedly involved in drug-related violent crimes and his son seems to have chosen his footsteps to follow instead of his now-royal mother’s.
Not only is young Marius facing multiple allegations of abuse from two of his ex-girlfriends – admitting that he’d been under the influence of drugs and cocaine and saying that he regretted his actions – he was arrested for a second time in September after reportedly breaking a restraining order against his current girlfriend.
Although Marius isn’t an official member of the royal family, the allegations are proving to be a major embarrassment for his mother and her husband, as the Crown Princess has now been summoned for questioning in the case, per Norwegian publication Aftenposten.
But this is hardly where Marius’ troubles end, as according to Aftenposten, he’s now been blocked from accessing his mother and stepfather’s home. Marius—who lives in a separate house on the royal couple’s private property “at the edge of the forest”—reportedly hosted an out-of-control party that was raided by a motorcycle gang and resulted in a burglary, per Se og Hør.
The Norwegian outlet reported that “valuables with both high crown and affection value for the crown prince’s family” were taken during the party, and in a video the publication obtained, a “person rides around singing on a Segway” through the royal home. Borg Høiby was also seen “driving rough and denting a car on the Skaugum estate.”
Marius has previously said that he suffers from several mental disorders that have led to struggles with addiction, per YOU. After his ex-girlfriend, Rebecca Helberg Arntsen (the one who took out the restraining order against him) was hospitalised due to injuries sustained during one of his attacks, he said he would be going to rehab.
“It has been a tough and difficult few weeks for everyone, which has made it difficult for him to focus fully on his own problems,” his lawyer said in a statement. “Now that the interrogations have been completed, he will shortly begin full-time rehabilitation.”
Perhaps that was a ruse, or he wasn’t there long enough, or perhaps it didn’t work on the damaged boy, because he’s still very clearly causing loads of trouble.
As for the Crown Princess – who battles the serious lung disease pulmonary fibrosis – she’s now on medical leave just as her son’s legal woes unfold. The palace announced she’d be stepping back from royal duties, delicately noting, “Previous experience has shown that the medications can lead to side effects, potentially disrupting the Crown Princess’ official schedule.”
What shambles.
