The best Christmas markets in Switzerland can be quite a spectacular affair. Towering Christmas trees bedecked in glittering lights, and baubles become the centrepiece of many festivities, as stallholders take residence in small wooden huts for a month to sell their unique wares, from arty prints to handmade ceramics. Mulled wine and punch scent the air as the Swiss gather in pop-up chalets, dipping crisp baby potatoes and cornichons into pots of molten cheese. From the numerous Christmas markets in the largest cities to the more authentic arrivals in the small snow-dusted towns, this is our pick of the best around.

Geneva
Switzerland’s financial centre and the home of Europe’s United Nations and Red Cross is often overlooked as a city break destination and known for its business vibe. However, Geneva can pull off the festive spirit like any other Swiss city. The winter market opens up mid-November and runs till just before Christmas Day beside the dazzling lake. Local makers and creators sell unique wares from cosy wooden chalets, wrapped-up locals dip treats into pots of molten fondue, and children while away afternoons on the vintage carousel or by getting involved in crafty workshops.

Bern
As Switzerland’s largest city and de facto capital, Bern hosts several Christmas markets throughout November and December. Berner Sternenmarkt is the largest, transforming Kleine Schanze city park into a winter wonderland the size of a small village around the penultimate week of November. Roam around 80 wooden huts selling kitsch trinkets and traditional gifts, and indulge at the pop-up fondue chalet – there’s a merry-go-round and entertainment in the Bern Children’s Village. Alternatively, check out Münsterplatz Christmas market, where dozens of artisans sell treats and gifts in the shadow of Bern Minster, a spectacular Gothic-style cathedral.
