I’ve got to admit that it might be my fault, I stole so much pick and mix from that place,
I have the Woolworths dog teddy bear (Was it called Worth? Since the sheep was called Wooly?) still. I shall have a glass and a cupcake with him later. He’s still going strong 😊
Found my collection of Wooly and Worths in the loft this weekend, gave them a quick wash in the washing machine and they’re still going strong.
Do miss Woolies at Christmas , B&M isn’t really the same :/
Woolworths also took down Virgin Megastores/Zavvi.
Basically Woolworths owned their media supplier (Entertainment UK) and when Woolworths went down they took the supplier down with them too.
My first job was in Woolworths. They shut down a month later.
Ironically, someone did manage to blow up Woolworths.
Wasn’t it something like 58,000 workers lost their jobs due to Woolies going under? So sad.
Someone here should probably know this, I was told that 11 months of the year Woolworths lost money or just about broke even, but the money they made in December and Xmas time brought them back into the black and covered the sparse months. Apparently they did this for years but finally their creditors and suppliers got too jittery and basically pulled the plug?
When I was young, Woolies had a promotion where they hid some random items around the store price at 1p. Back in those days it was price labels on every item.
I had the time to search around and found a box of Black Magic chocolates for 1p and gave them to my mum 😁
Yep a sad loss to the high street.
And yet WHSmiths staggers on , like the 11th season of the walking dead. The same in name only. A shell of its former self. As a youth I used to go and get my hobby magazines from the big one in Manchester and it was a magical place. It was niche pastime shangrila
I thought woolys ceased trading?
Probably before I was born
Woolworths were always a busy shop so I never understood how they went bankrupt and yet WHSmith with more staff than customers stays in business.
I still dream of the pick n mix
Weird they went under and then Wilko’s filled the gap in the market. Was basically Woolworths in all but name… until they finally went under last year. B&M, The Range etc are low rent imitations but are still opening stores.
Worked there for 2 years until it closed. Still to this day my favourite job. But then I was lucky to have a cool manager. We all got drunk on the last day before we shut too 😂

in a better timeline, on a better planet, Woolies would still be with us. Same with Wilkos and Littlewoods, too.
I remember going into the Ipswich one at the end of it all. Place was crazy.
