  1. MPs can claim an extra £20,000 of taxpayer cash for up to three children as part of their accommodation budget

MPs are able to claim thousands of pounds in taxpayer-funded support for up to three children despite [imposing a two-child cap for benefit claimants](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/starmer-pressure-two-child-benefit-cap-snp-scrap-it-3170133?ico=in-line_link).

MPs can claim almost £7,000 per child each year for up to three children on top of their standard accommodation budget, which can be up to £29,000 a year.

However, people claiming universal credit or tax credit eligible for a child benefit uplift cannot receive support for more than two children.

Labour has been under pressure to scrap the two-child benefit cap, including from its own MPs, but Prime Minister [Keir Starmer](https://inews.co.uk/topic/keir-starmer?srsltid=AfmBOoolKW_JQWp0RpgQtTiofXBLJhTkvNGC030Q9roRAwgw80LqjmJl?ico=in-line_link) and Chancellor [Rachel Reeves ](https://inews.co.uk/topic/rachel-reeves?srsltid=AfmBOopNLJR-6QrN5A7hfMzfZSaXoXuzWHZfoqPAH5cdFdsnVf_yjyyG?ico=in-line_link)have said the estimated £2.5bn to £3.6bn cost is not affordable.

The cap was introduced by the Conservatives in 2015.

In recent years, some MPs have been able to claim up to £40,000 annually for accommodation costs, including additional funding for their children.

They are entitled to apply for accommodation costs to compensate for living and working in two locations – their constituencies and London – worth up to £29,290 a year.

They can additionally claim for up to three dependants—a child under 18 or an adult who needs care—up to a maximum of £6,680 per child or person.

Data published by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) shows that more than 180 MPs claimed the £6,680 uplift for at least one dependant in the 2022/2023 financial year, the most recent year for which data is available.

According to IPSA, dependants include children up to the age of 18 for whom the MP has parental responsibility or a person claiming disability benefits for whom the politician is their primary carer. The dependant must be registered with IPSA by the MP for the claim to be valid.

The accommodation uplift only includes spouses who meet the criteria of a dependant, such as if the MP is also the primary carer for their partner.

MPs can also claim money to cover travel between their constituency and London for themselves, their spouse and dependants.

In 2022/2023, 21 MPs claimed the uplift for three children, 13 of whom were Conservative MPs and five of whom were Labour MPs.

However, some MPs are uneasy about the uplift’s generosity.

One Labour MP, elected for the first time earlier this year, told **i** they had deliberately claimed for only two of their three children in “solidarity” with the two-child benefit cap.

  2. MP’s set laws for the other classes that benefit them. This isn’t news, every week this happens with taxpayer money or lawbreaking and nothing ever changes. Next election let’s do something different and vote either Tory or Labour /s

  3. Same useless nonsense as before, again down to the wording that all MPs love. “Guidance” and don’t forget “Expectation”
Why don’t they try Rules, just for a change

  4. Didn’t we go through the whole MP expenses 20 years ago and find they all blatantly took the piss and then cried when they were caught. Multiple cars, homes, embezzlement a duck pond lol I’d honestly love to see a non parliamentary group look over these numbers and just laugh at the excuses. Bearing in mind you’re a PUBLIC SERVANT and get a good wage etc. sorry for rant but I’m just bored of rich people crying after decades of the good life.

  5. So they get benefitted a whole yearly salary for having kids yet everyone was screaming earlier about a woman who conceived 2 kids through rape not allowed to have anymore kids or her kids to be even taken away. But this? 8 comments in 2 hours lol uk people are fucked

  6. Why are their kids part of job expenses?

Don’t they claim child benefits like the rest of us?

  7. Shouldn’t they just get a wage, and thats it?
You know, like the rest of us who have a job.

I earn about 30k so I’m entitled to absolutely nothing, pretty sure MP’s get a lot more than that.

  8. They shouldn’t shell out kids they don’t have the money to pay for should apply as much to MPs as to the feckless.

  9. Put them on exactly the same expenses as anyone else. Including paying tax on them if they ‘expect’ to work away more than 24 months. In fact stick them on Inside IR 35 contracts via serco or g4 like they’ve driven everyone else towards

  10. Yeah it’s a little Map reimbursement rule known as the. Child-benefit Uniform Necessities- Three Siblings. It’s one rule for us and another for the CUNTS.
