Worth remembering that Orban is not all about Putin. He’s all about Orban. He’s not a Putin Puppet like Lukashenko, he’s his own dictator and his actions are often more about trying to extort the EU to maintain his dictatorship without consequences.
But in all his blustering he hasn’t prepared Hungary for the Russian pipeline through Ukraine to be terminated and he has a lot of his own companies invested in it.
Zelensky has that card here and who knows how he might play it. If Ukraine decides to renew the pipe deal they could force it to monthly renewals so Orban is kept in check. A wrong move and Ukraine let’s it expire at the end of the month and either leaves it there to entice Orban or blows it to Kingdom come so it’s out of the game.
Orban loves his ego stroked as well. Doesn’t cost Zelensky a lot to look like the bigger man, stroke the ego and keep support flowing. It’s why, despite others criticising Orban, Zelensky has generally been very careful and reluctant to do so. Even with Trump he has held back a lot of criticism to account for the U.S. election result.
Here’s your official symbol that the process to peace has started. It will be long and arduous, unfortunately.

Dangerous, but I think that Zelenskyy knows what he’s doing. With Russia in its current state of Paper Tiger and the EU completely sick of Orban’s blocking, Orban may be trying to wriggle out of all the sucking up he’s done without drawing too much attention to being a dictator or losing his EU influence.
