Partner is travelling back to the UK for the first time in a while – are any of these useless as change? I'm looking at you, 1984 issue pound coin

  1. You never see the £2 coins anymore, which is a shame because they look like pirate money.

  2. That old pound coin is useless. That one 3rd down on the left looks like an old 5p which would be useless too, or it might be a new 10p in which case its fine.

That being said, you can’t exactly buy a lot of stuff with all this anyway so…

  3. Sorry we don’t use money any more, we just barter or use bottle caps to buy yellow vials.

  4. I think they’re all fine except for the old £1 coin (second up on the left) but if you can find an actual bank branch with people in it, you should be able to get it exchanged for a current coin.

  5. Man, the old pound coin did look a bit shit in retrospect, didn’t it? Definitely prefer the new look which stands out better for what should be our most iconic coin.

  6. Depends if you’re planning on using them in the UK. Probably won’t do much good if you try using them in Zimbabwe.

  7. 10p and 50p at the bottom are counterfeit (most cashiers won’t care) and the old pound needs to be cashed in at a bank. The rest are good.

  8. All useless, you might as well chuck them out. Hand them over and I’ll do it for you, save you a job👍

  9. Useless in the sense that you’re going to be hard pressed to find anything remotely useful for £3.50 or less in *this* economy. Am I right?

  10. There was a time when that would buy you a pint and a bag of crisps…so no mostly all useless

  11. Aside from the obvious that accepted as legal tender, i’d say the 2p is worthless

You need 50 of them to make even £1, not sure if there’s any point to hanging onto copper these days

  12. The old pound coin is useless (not because it’s old, because it’s been superseded by the newer one – on the right). Also what’s the date on the 50p? The old massive ones were changed for smaller ones – still big – about 1997
