Sam Allison becomes first black referee in Premier League for 15 years
The huge smile of a man not just stepping out onto the pitch but also into the history books on boxing day at baml Lane Sam Allison became the first black man to referee a Premier League match since 2008 15 years since Uriah reny the only other topf flight black referee
Retired it’s something Joel manx feared he’d never see again today’s is of mixed emotions um one I am absolutely ecstatic for Sam so I know Sam’s worked very hard I know Sam personally and he’s worked really hard the second is wow in 30 years of refereeing we’ve only had two
Uh referees of color I’m a bit sad about that but why has it taken so long to get here there’s been so many stumbling blocks at bum we’ve always talked about the three Rs which is recruitment retention and obviously representation I’ve always been one if you can’t see it
You can’t be it this summer the fa announced plans to massively increase the number of referees working in Grassroots football from diverse groups they want to hire a thousand more women and a thousand more men from black Asian or ethnic minority groups by 2026 they’re hoping that that in turn
Will increase the representation in the elite game I I think the targets that they they’ve talked about will will really help the learnings must be from what happened in 19 in the 1990s to the 2000s those learnings there why did did people of color and females not come
Through the game when we did have them at the top then and let’s learn from that and bring it forward and just give everyone a chance that’s that’s where this needs to sit it’s been a big week of progress as on Saturday Rebecca Welch became the first woman to ever referee a
Premier League game there’s no doubt that the face of football refereeing is changing but it’s a change that for some is too slow and long overdue Rachel venal Sky News
Sam Allison has become the first black referee to take charge of a game in the Premier League for 15 years and only the second ever.
The 42-year-old former firefighter took charge of Luton’s 3-2 win at Sheffield United, becoming the first time black man to officiate a Premier League match since 2008.

Well done to him.
Why mention his colour ? What has that got to do with anything ? Its the fact the MEDIA keep going on about it is whats causing the problem.
Congratulations Sam! Bloody ridiculous it has taken so long. Is it the training for it that takes too long or is it more down to people not wanting to do it for fear of abuse and racism/ sexism?
News of a black referee in a Premier league game took skynews a few hours to release across their social media. However it took over 24hrs for the same media outlet to release information about an arsonist attack on a Tory MPs constituency office.
Is there a bit of bias within Skynews?….
What the hell? It doesn't matter if he's black, white or female, the skills are important, not the colour or gender!
First black car on the road
Where are the Asian refs?
Did the teams have to take a knee before him?
Can't be worse than current ones…
So what?
This is big achievement , 😅😅😅
2 referees in two decades , this is very big achievement
Why is this even news in 2023? Seriously nobody cares.
He finally proved his qualities to step up another level
Cringe Alert!!!!! 🚨 🚨🚨🚨
It’s always “FIRST” black this black that. It’s sooooooooo bad! Racism will never go away lol
First women, now this 🤦🏻
Why does the color of his skin matter?
I'm sure he earned his way to this position, the media however are the ones pushing this idea to people that he's only arrived to become some trophy black guy and tick a box. The media are disgusting and cause racial hatred.
in a results based business the skin colour is non important
sky staff 100% 💩🤡
In goes hojlund 👹👹👹🥳
Come on Sky, stop getting desperate. Does it really matter what colour he is? I'm sure there'll be plenty more to come…
Could it be that in a majority white nation (90+%) that not too many black men are actually trying to become referees?
Finally
Equality of oppertunity,,,not equality of outcome is the important thing..
Why's this news? Congrats for him but who cares what colour the referees are
I'm was the first person up on Christmas morning in our house it's the first time in 16 years so I win
Box ticking, WOKE bs
I remember the days when the best person would get the job.
BLDM
Is this news? A man is a referee? So what
Great news! But we still have a long way to go… What about a Trans referee preferably of colour, or a disabled lesbian referee. The sad fact is that until we have every group represented we have no group represented. It's all very stale,, cis, male, old, white, and stale at the moment 😔
Proof that Sky are as racist as anyone else. Leave colour out of it!!
It's a shame that this is newsworthy.
Right.
Oh whoopy. Yawn.
Shocking referee ! However good luck 👍
And that’ll be it. Token black guy…
He was awful 😂
I thought that skin colour didn’t matter? Now there’s a whole report on it 😂
Sammy was an excellent player, he knows the game and will go on to be a top ref. Best wishes Sammy.
What the UK really needs is more black school teachers
No one cares.
What is it about society and the press that has to continually focus on the colour of a talented individuals skin. It’s his personality that got him to be selected. Soon we’ll be on to religion and hijabs.
Wow, 15 years wow
What's his skin colour got to do with it?
So, he’s as impartial about football as Sly News is partial about his race?
Ridiculously cocky audio
Having seen his referring in the lower leagues I am of the view this is a token appointment for the sake of diversity.
It's levelling down of the worst kind
Imagine having your achievements defined by the colour of your skin….
Who gives a F
