Queen Margrethe II of Denmark Announces Surprise Abdication on New Year’s Eve

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has announced that she will abdicate the throne in January.

The surprise announcement came during a televised new year address, during which she suggested health complications had led to her decision.

The 83-year-old is currently the world’s only reigning queen.

Queen Margrethe knew Queen Elizabeth II well and the pair met on numerous occasions.

More recently, the Princess of Wales met the Danish royals at the Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen in 2022.

The Danish throne will now pass to Margrethe’s son, Crown Prince Frederik.

His Australian-born wife, Princess Mary, will become Denmark’s Queen Consort.

Margrethe will formally end her reign on January 14, 52 years to the day since she became queen.

  11. Dir königin läßt der jugend den Vortritt. So gehört es sich auch. Ich liebe das dänische königshaus. Fsst kein drama was die königin nicht in griff hatte. Entzog den Verwandten die titel und hinterlässt Frédéric und Mary kein chaos. Das ist gensudo wie dchweden und spanien ein königshaus was man respektieren kann. Nicht so ein Kasperletheater wie die britische monarchie die führerlos dahinvegetiert.

  17. In my eyes, the monarch is obligated for the rest of his life. Being king or queen is not a job, it is a service to the crown and a passion to protect and lead the people.

  20. A few nasty comments below – It's nobody's business but theirs. I hope she continues to live a happy peaceful life for the remainder of her days and that there will be many days. My mother is the same age as Queen Margrethe II and I wouldn't want her to have the weight of a country on her shoulders. Let her live her later years with peace and relaxation.

  37. The Crown Prince is a credit to his lovely mother and will be a popular monarch as she is. And Crown Princess Mary is a great example of how a commoner from another country can endear herself to her royal husband's people.
