A sudden loss for the Ugandan kingdom
The king’s passing occurred at approximately 10:00 p.m. local time on Thursday.
Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, the prime minister of Tooro, announced the news online, sharing, “It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV”.
While the exact cause of his death has not been disclosed, a government minister, Balaam Barugahara, mentioned shortly before the official announcement that the monarch had been receiving medical care in the United States.
The announcement has sparked widespread sorrow throughout Uganda, dominating national news and social media.
Leading opposition politician and pop star Bobi Wine expressed his sadness publicly, calling it the “Most devastating news! May His Majesty the King’s soul rest in eternal peace”.
A historic reign from early childhood
King Oyo’s historic journey on the throne began when he was just three years old. He was crowned on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father, Rukirabasaija Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. This early coronation made him the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
Although Uganda functions as a republic with an elected president, traditional kingdoms like Tooro, situated in the west near the Democratic Republic of Congo border continue to play a significant role.
Although these monarchs do not hold direct political power, they retain massive social and cultural influence over their communities.
A legacy of youthful leadership
Despite his early start, King Oyo’s youth was viewed as an asset rather than a hurdle.
Tooro’s prime minister had previously celebrated the young king’s modern outlook, stating: “Our King is not distant from the realities of his people; he is part of this generation, part of this ecosystem, growing, learning, and leading… His youth is not a limitation; it is a strength. It brings energy, fresh perspective, and the courage to imagine a different future for Tooro”.
Although the young monarch was unmarried, the kingdom has assured its people of a stable transition.
As Reuters reported, the prime minister described the death as “an immeasurable loss,” but reassured the public that the king has left an heir, meaning that the “continuity of the Crown is assured”.
